Presentation of Kaunas Antanas Smetona Gymnasium


Kaunas Antanas Smetona Gymnasium  (former 48th Secondary School) was founded in 1986. In 1993  the name of Kaunas Kalnieciai Secondary School was given.  In 2009 the name of Kaunas Antanas Smetona Secondary School was imparted.  After successful accreditation of the secondary education program, the gymnasium status was granted.

The legal form of the gymnasium is the budgetary institution.

The owner of the institution is Kaunas City Municipality.

The main purpose of the gymnasium is the gymnasium type gymnasium. The  language of teaching is  Lithuanian . The forms of learning are the group learning implemented by means of daily and distance teaching  process organization and individual learning  implemented through individual, independent and remote ways of organizing the teaching process.

The  educational programs carried out  in the gymnasium are: part II of the basic curriculum, the secondary curriculum and non-formal child education programs.

By 2018 September 1st data 302 students study at the gymnasium. The gymnasium  has a set of 12 classes: There are 6 sets of I – II gymnasium classes and 6 sets of III – IV gymnasium classes.

The aim of the gymnasium is to develop the spiritual, intellectual and physical powers of the person, general and essential subject competences necessary for further learning, professional career and independent living.

Tasks of Gymnasium:

  • to ensure the harmonious development of the natural powers of the pupils, to foster their spiritual culture and citizenship;
  • To seek high levels of students achievements in studies by acquiring knowledge and developing general skills and competences;
  • To help students develop communication skills, acquire the basics of information culture and computer literacy that meet the needs of today’s life and the future;
  • to reveal and develop the creative powers of students, to develop artistic and aesthetic competence, to help engage in cultural life of the community;
  • to develop and strengthen students‘ respect for the state and the law, as well as the pursuit of the good of the general society;
  • to encourage students to develop communication, collaboration and teamwork skills;
  • to take care of age-based sexual education of pupils based on moral values;
  • to provide conditions to help the learner develop a moral and civic consciousness based on responsibility, humanism and democracy values, and a commitment to these values ​​in their lives and activities;
  • to develop key personal powers and, in particular, high-level critical thinking, problem-solving, etc., relevant to the knowledge of society skills;
  • to develop the communication skills and information culture (knowledge of mother tongue and foreign languages, computer literacy) that are important in today’s life;
  • to develop a social culture that responds to the needs of life – communication and cooperation skills, the competence necessary for the harmonious coexistence of various social cultural traditions in society;
  • to promote self-confidence, initiative, self-reliance, determination to take responsibility, attitude and ability to learn throughout life, self-improvement.
